Prairie grasses. Wildflower plots. Soil
conservation. Groundwater uses. These are just a few of the natural resources topics
which the Papio-Missouri River NRD (P-MRNRD) works with in its education programs.
The NRD's Information/Education Department works with students, teachers, youth groups and other such groups in conservation education. Our goal is to provide correct materials that encourage stewardship of our resources-and we're meeting that goal. In fact, the NRD was recently named "District of the Year" for its education programs by the National Association of Conservation Districts, including the following:
In-School presentations: Programs include in-school presentations on groundwater and surface water. We own two outstanding models on groundwater and surface water which are available for check out. Other program topics include birds & habitats, natural resources issues, gps/geocaching, and Missouri River Corridor projects. Programs are given on a limited basis; please contact the information/education department for details.
Groundwater Model: a 60-lb. Model filled with sand, rocks and clay which water can flow through, representing Nebraska's groundwater aquifers. You can pump up water, and add pollutants, which travel through the system. Training is required before use in your classroom. Works well with ages 3rd - 12th grades.
Enviroscape: a large, lightweight model which shows watersheds, and how soil conservation and best-management practices are needed to maintain a clean water supply. A great hands-on model; comes with a training guide. Great for grades 1st - 6th.
School Partnerships: The NRD is active in local Public Schools’ Partnership programs. Our partner with Omaha Public Schools is Benson West Elementary. Andersen Middle School in Millard is our PAYBAC partner, and Papillion South High School is our BEST partner.
Field Trips: At Chalco Hills Recreation Area.
Book & Video Library: Available for check out are books and videos, which are available for teachers and youth group leaders. Books include many activity guides and curriculums for pre K - secondary.
Please contact the information/education department for a materials list.
Outdoor Classrooms: Conservation learning at your school.
Water Works: A fun-filled two-day event for fifth grades focusing on water.
Teacher Scholarships: Each summer, the NRD gives scholarships to teachers for summer classes and workshops focusing on environmental issues. Teachers must either reside or teach in the District's six counties. Submit an electronic form here.
Envirothon: This high school environmental competition is part of a national challenge on the environment.
