Joe Riebe – Employee Spotlight

Today we shine the spotlight on Joe Riebe, our Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist (say what?).

Where did you grow up?

Grafton, WI

What does your job entail (job duties and how does your work impact the public)?

I create maps and apps for use by Papio NRD employees and the public, and I manage spatial data and databases relevant to the District.

How long have you worked for the District?

11+ years

What’s the most unique thing in your office or on your desk right now?

A free-hand drawing made by my nine-year-old nephew.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work (hobbies, volunteering, etc.)?

Traveling, sports, golfing, helping with my kids’ activities, being outdoors

What educational background or experience do you bring to your role (degree(s), coursework, skills learned, etc.)?

B.S. Degree in Environmental Science Biology, GIS and Statistics minors

Is there family, significant other, or furry friend information you’d like to share?

Wife (Kim) and two kids – Clara (7) and Benny (5)

What project(s) are you most proud of and why?

Rural water systems mobile maps and apps because they are used daily by system operators to maximize their efficiency in the field. They can see real-time information and update any features to reflect current conditions or status. They can also locate and mark water mains more efficiently and without the use of cumbersome paper maps.

What is the funniest/craziest thing that’s happened to you at work (that you can share, of course)?

1) Seeing all the massive ice chunks and debris on the levees during the 2019 flood; 2) doing a survey on the Platte River in an airboat; 3) Seeing an ice jam on the Platte River up close in-person.
