ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PRESENTATIONS

Bringing Nature to Your Classroom

Looking to enrich your classroom curriculum through engaging natural resources programs? You’ve come to the right place.

Our free presentations are designed to educate and inspire students through fun, interactive experiences. Some presentations are available year-round, while others are tailored to specific seasons or offered on a limited basis.

Please Note:

Our presentations book up to four months in advance, so it’s highly recommended that you submit your request as early as possible. Once your request is received, our education team will contact you to confirm a presentation date and time.

We strive to accommodate all program requests. In the unlikely event members of our education team are ill, we are unable to reschedule presentations.

Programs held outdoors are weather-dependent, as many of the animals are sensitive to extreme temperatures.

Presentation Topics

Animal Adaptations

Our all-encompassing wildlife program uses various Nebraska animals to help students learn about unique adaptations that allow these animals to survive.
Recommended Age: Appropriate for groups of all sizes and ages.
Aquatic Animals

Join us as we explore a variety of aquatic animals, their adaptations, and what they tell us about ecosystem health.
Recommended Age: Appropriate for groups of all sizes and ages.
Flooding 101

The Omaha metro is no stranger to flooding. Through our hands-on flood model, students gain a thorough understanding of the dangers of flooding and the ways the Papio NRD works to reduce the impact of flooding in our area.
Recommended Age: 4th grade and up
Best suited for classroom-sized groups or smaller.
Geocaching
This program combines technology with the natural world. Students gain experience with GPS technology by using GPS devices to find “hidden treasures” at an area park (or your school grounds).
Recommended Age: 4th – 6th grade
Available May-October. Best suited for classroom-sized groups or smaller.
Groundwater

It can be challenging to grasp what you cannot see, which explains why groundwater is an often-misunderstood resource. Students gain insight into hydrology and issues affecting this essential resource using a cross-section ground model.
Recommended Age: 3rd grade and up
Best suited for classroom-sized groups or smaller.
Incredible Insects

With the aid of live insects, we explore the hidden world of six-legged animals.
Recommended Age: Kindergarten
Available April-October. Best suited for classroom-sized groups or smaller.
Natural Resources

Looking for something all-encompassing? This presentation provides insight into natural resources, human impact, and what Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) do.
It combines portions of our other environmental education presentations.
Recommended Age: 4th grade and up
Best suited for classroom-sized groups or smaller.
Surface Water

Through hands-on models, students learn about watersheds, erosion, and pollution to understand current water quality issues facing the Omaha metro and surrounding areas.
Recommended Age: 3rd – 5th grade
Best suited for classroom-sized groups or smaller.
Terrestrial Animals

Nebraska boasts many unique habitats, from woodlands to short and tall grass prairies to agricultural fields and sandhill dunes. The diverse landscape is home to several species of land-dwelling animals. Learn what adaptations help these native critters survive.
Recommended Age: Appropriate for groups of all sizes and ages.
Trees

In conjunction with the our annual
Trees and Seeds Program, discover what a tree needs to survive and how trees help us do the same. Get your own tree seedling to take home and plant in celebration of Arbor Day.
Recommended Age: Kindergarten – 5th grade
Available in April.
Turtle Talk

Nebraska is home to nine species of turtles. Learn all about what makes a turtle … a turtle with the help of a few of our animal educators.
Recommended Age: Appropriate for groups of all sizes and ages.
Wetlands & Macroinvertebrates
Get your hands a little dirty as we investigate a wetland up close. Using sampling equipment, students dip for macroinvertebrates to understand the health of area ponds and lakes.
Recommended Age: 3rd grade and up.
Available April-October. Best suited for classroom-sized groups or smaller.
Wildlife Wonders
Explore the life history of common Nebraska mammals. Using pelts, skulls, and tracks, kids gain a better understanding of how these animals live.

Picture of a little boy, in a classroom, holding a tree sapling and an adoption certificate.

Each spring, our education team provides thousands of trees and flower seed packets to classrooms across the District, offering students a hands-on planting experience. The trees are young seedlings and the flowers are a native variety.

Trees are available for educators to order in January and are available for pick up in mid-April, just in time for Arbor Day and Earth Day celebrations.
